Mouth Gaurds

Athletes of all ages who participate in contact sports or activities should wear a protective mouth guard. These essential pieces of equipment can prevent permanent and severe dental damage from being sustained after a hard blow to the mouth. Our mouth guards are made out of high-quality materials to ensure durability, and they are custom-fit to feel as comfortable and as unobtrusive as possible. This makes them ideal for virtually any athlete. By wearing one of these devices, a person is much more likely to get back into the game after sustaining a hit.

Our practice provides mouth guards that are custom-designed based on impressions of the patient’s teeth. Our patients find that the mouth guards we provide offer a superb fit and that they feel very comfortable. They should also not interfere with the user’s normal breathing or speaking.

By wearing a mouth guard, an athlete is less likely to experience any of the following:

  • Damaged teeth
  • Lost teeth
  • Lacerations in the mouth or on the lips
  • Jawbone damage

Since our mouth guards are custom-made, a patient must make two visits to our practice to receive one. The first visit is when impressions will be taken of the patient’s teeth. This information will then be forwarded to a dental laboratory so that the appliance can be built. The patient can then pick up the device when it is ready.

In addition to mouth guards, our practice also provides dental night guards. These are oral appliances that are worn while sleeping to prevent damage from bruxism. This condition causes a person to unknowingly clench and grind their teeth while they are sleeping. People who suffer from bruxism are more likely to experience problems such as worn teeth, jaw damage, teeth fractures and other oral injuries. Most of our patients who use night guards report that they are very comfortable and that they do not interrupt their sleeping.

A mouth guard can mean the difference between keeping your teeth safe and suffering from a severe oral injury. You can be fitted for a protective mouth guard or a night guard by making a visit to Independent Dental Care. Please call us at (239) 437-8900 to schedule an appointment.

Same Day Emergency Treatment

Is it possible to receive treatment on the day? Typically, yes. We will always work you into our schedule as soon as possible. Typically, any same-day treatment will be focused on alleviating your pain or discomfort. It may be an interim therapy such as a temporary filling or pain reliever to tide you over until we can have you back for a permanent treatment (such as a crown or root canal). Sometimes antibiotics can also be useful, particularly if swelling or infection are involved.  After you’re finally out of pain, we’ll discuss the next steps to preserve your smile.
