In some cases, the best way to restore a patient’s oral health is to remove one or more of their teeth. This type of treatment is most often provided when a tooth has experienced severe, irreparable damage or when a tooth is causing problems or issues for other teeth. The experts at Independent Dental Care always work to ensure that the tooth extraction process is kept as safe as possible and that the patient is kept comfortable.
The first step when providing a tooth extraction is to take digital X-rays of the tooth and the area surrounding it. This is done so that we can determine the easiest and safest way to remove the tooth. Once we have determined our plan of action, we will treat the tooth and the nearby areas with a local anesthetic. This will numb the area and prevent the patient from experiencing pain as the tooth is being pulled. In most cases, a patient will only feel a sensation of pressure at the site of the extraction. Once the tooth is out, we will get to work controlling any bleeding. The patient will be asked to bite down on a piece of gauze for 30 to 45 minutes. This will allow a blood clot to form.
It is important not to disturb the blood clot in any way. Patients are instructed to refrain from drinking alcohol, using drugs, smoking, using a straw, rinsing vigorously and participating in intensive exercise for at least 24 hours following the procedure so that they do not irritate the extraction site. A patient should expect that it will take at least a few days for them to heal from the extraction entirely.
There are a few things that a patient can do to expedite the recovery process and to keep themselves more comfortable. By using an ice pack on the outer cheek, the patient can reduce any swelling that follows. After the swelling has subsided, a warm compress can be applied to the area for comfort.
